Michigan Opera Theatre marked the 10th anniversary of the opening of Detroit Opera House last April with a gala recital under the banner of "A Decade of Divas, Dramas and Dreams." It was a grand night of singing but also a relatively modest affair -- only about 700 of MOT's closest friends and donors were in the audience and the evening was less a glitzy black-tie party than a warm gathering of friends.

The eighth annual Detroit Summer Smash started last night at Detroit's Lager House, but there's still time to catch some great Detroit indie acts tonight and Saturday at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit.

Summer Smash began in 1999 when a group of Detroit area musicians decided to organize a three-day music festival. It showcased soon-to-be local stars the Sights, Slumber Party and Outrageous Cherry.

Iwas tired of my friends ragging me about it. And to tell the truth, I was beginning to feel hopelessly "not-with-it." Until a month ago, it seems I was the last sucker on Earth -- and a music critic, no less -- who didn't own an iPod. Looking me in the eye with the earnestness of a doctor who's about to deliver a grave prognosis, my homegirl Tanika told me last December: "Rashod, with all the music you have, you really need to get one."
